Happy Thursday Y’all,

A little mid-week dose of the Clean Up. A couple of exciting things we want to share with you all. You may notice this week that our store is not available. We are in the midst of re-organizing and re-merchandising.

The Clean Up is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

First and foremost, we are releasing our first collection of socks Made in Portugal. This quest to get these socks to market started in 2019, and then got derailed by covid in 2020. We have made this decision in an effort to further reduce our impact, and also simplify our supply chain. Our primary material is Recover /Ferre FBlue yarn, recycled cotton, and recycled polyester. This yarn comes from Alicante Spain. For the past few years we have been moving this yarn to China, or Japan for knitting, then finished goods move to US, and Europe for sales. Moving yarn and products all over the world multiple times is not efficient. Our new factory partners are based in Manhente, Portugal near Porto. This means our materials travel less than 1,000 km by truck in a day or so instead of weeks on a boat to China.

Recover fiber is already the lowest-impact cotton option in the world. This shift to Portugal speeds up our ability to produce and further reduces our footprint in manufacturing. It allows us to directly import into the EU, and UK in a matter of days, and transit to the US market is about the same as it was previously from Asia.

With this drop about 50% of our collection and inventory is now from this new supply chain, and by Spring 2024 it will be 100%. And! The quality of the product is amazing. We are very excited about this!

Later this month we are going to release our first take-back bag program. This is also very exciting for us. We had a great conversation with the company For Days a few months ago about being a part of their take-back network, soon you will be able to buy an Arvin Goods take-back bag, send in your old socks (or other clothing) and receive credit toward new socks on arvingoods.com. Stay tuned for more in-depth information on how to swap your socks for some freshies.
